Weston
H4 Chondrite
Fell December 14, 1807, 6:00 AM Local Time
Fairfield Co., Connecticut

I would more easily believe that two Yankee professors would lie than that stones would fall from heaven - Supposedly said by Thomas Jefferson Z

Recent historical searches have strongly suggested that this statement went more like:

A cautious mind will weigh well the opposition of the phenomenon to everything hitherto observed, the strength of the testimony by which it is supported, and the errors and misconceptions to which even our senses are liable. It may be very difficult to explain how the stone you possess came into the position in which it was found, but is it easier to explain how it got into the clouds from whence it is supposed to have fallen?

The Weston meteorite greeted the Connecticut morning with a brilliant fireball and smoke trail accompanied by three thunderous booms. Some 330 kg were immediatiately recovered along with witness statements and were tested by two professors at Yale University who presented their findings to President Jefferson.

Weston was the first recorded New World fall and did much to advance the science of meteoritics.
