MBALE
L5-6 Chondrite
Fell August 14, 1992
Uganda, Africa

On August 14, 1992 at 12:40 UTC , the Mbale meteorite arrived with a deafening explosion that shook the densely populated city of Mbale . Suddenly, rocks rained down everywhere. Factories, schools, even the local prison were pelted by the terrifying shower of stones. A small boy was struck, but not injured. Many of the meteorites were later recovered and ground into a paste that was either ingested or applied on the body by townspeople who believed the stones were a cure for AIDS sent by God. Shortly after the fall, an expedition gathered eye witness accounts and located the position of 48 impacts of masses between 0.1 g and 27.4 kg. In all, at least 2003 stones were recovered totaling close to 150 kg.

Most of this material is locked up in collections and institutions and perfect little beauties like these don't come around often.
