R chondrites, formerly known as Carlisle Lakes type meteorites, are named after the Rumuruti meteorite that fell in Kenya , Africa , in 1934 after it was further studied and ultimately reclassified.

R chondrites are highly oxidized and contain high amounts of iron-rich olivine and iron sulfides and fewer chondrules than ordinary chondrites. They often contain xenolithic inclusions and high amounts of noble gases that suggest they are a regolith from the surface of an asteroid. The parent body of the R chondrites is unknown.
